Mixing It Up

June 15-June 19

Click the link below to read a story called XO, OX by Adam Rex and Scott Campbell.  This book is for fun this week. It is full of imagination and adventure. It also will make you re think about the words you say, and how what you say could mean something different to the people hearing them.

Challenge 1: In this story Ox and Gazelle were both writing letters. Did you notice that each of them was having a hard time understanding what the other person meant in their letter. Why was this? Why were they writing one thing, but they were hearing something completely different?

Challenge 2: At the end of the story, the last page said Dear OX, and then the story ends. Can you write the rest of this letter? Be creative and imaginative. Try and keep to the style of Gazelle as she writes this letter to Ox.

Challenge 3: In this story, both Ox and Gazelle were not very kind. They both used insults and mean words. Have you ever insulted someone? What happened? Or has someone insulted you? What happened? Did you find a way to resolve your differences? Think about our lesson this year when we talked about "shredders" in our class. If you are being "shredded" how can you feel better?

Wolves

June 8-June 12

Click the link below to read a non-fiction story about Wolves. It is called Wolves by Laura Marsh. I chose this story because it non-fiction. It teaches us facts about wolves.

Challenge 1: I chose this story this week because it teaches us facts about wolves. Do you have a pet? What are 5 facts about your pet. Facts are true pieces of information. If you don't have a pet, do you know someone who has one? Write about their pet. Don't write about what you think or your opinion about this animal. Only write facts.

Challenge 2: Can you listen and remember the details? I chose this story this week because it teaches us facts about wolves. After reading this story, can you remember 5 facts about wolves? Write down what you remember. Try and use transition words in your writing like next, and then, or also. Try to remember while you are listening, then write the details down at the end. Does it get easier each time you listen?

Challenge 3:  There are so many stories with wolves as the characters.

The 3 Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, The boy who Cried Wolf, What time is it Mr. Wolf?, are just a few.

Watch ***THIS VIDEO*** about describing a character.

Can you think about a wolf character in a new story.

Don't make your wolf the same as a wolf from a story you have already read. Pick something different. Maybe your wolf can't get rid of the hiccups, or maybe your wolf got a bad haircut. Think about both the inside traits and the outside traits of your wolf. Make a list just like they did in the video above.

Frogs

June 1-June 15

Click the link below to watch a short song about 5 Fabulous Frogs. I chose this song because it introduces us to 5 frogs and a dog. The song tells us the frogs' names and also tells us a little bit about each character.

Choose one or all of the following ideas this week. You can write these in your journal.

Challenge 1: I chose this story this week because it talks about 5 friends and a dog. Who is one of your friends? Can you describe why they are your friend? Try and use lots of descriptive words. You can describe what they look like, but I also want you to think about the friendship qualities that you appreciate in your friend. Are they generous? Are they respectful? There are many qualities to choose from. Draw a picture of you and your friend playing.

Challenge 2: Can you listen and remember the details? This song is about 5 fabulous frogs and a dog. After listening to this story, how many details can you remember? What are the frogs names? Do you remember their personal qualities? If you don't remember, go back and listen to the song. Try to remember while you are listening, then write the details down at the end. Does it get easier each time you listen?

Challenge 3:  Can you create a story about these 5 fabulous frogs...and a dog. Click ***HERE*** to learn about writing a fairy tale. Can you create a fairy tale about these 5 frogs? Don't forget to have a beginning, middle and end. Get out a scrap piece of paper and write the details out just like they did in the video. Great planning leads to great story telling.

Paris

Paris

May 25-May 29

Click the link below to watch The Giraffe That Walked to Paris by Nancy Milton. I Chose this story this week because it is in the genre of books called Historical Fiction.  Historical Fiction means that the story takes place in an actual time in history. (Hint: the King of France actually did own a giraffe in Paris). This story is a little bit longer than some of the other stories we have read. I found it very fun and interesting.

Choose one or all of the following ideas this week. You can write these in your journal.

Challenge 1: I chose this story this week because it is really interesting. I noticed that the King of France was having a hard time being patient waiting for his Giraffe to arrive. I know you are having to be patient right now while you wait to be able to do all the fun things you used to do. What advice could you give the King of France while he waits for his giraffe. Write down the advice your give the King to help him be more patient.

Challenge 2: Can you listen and remember the facts and details? This story is based on a true story. The pasha of Egypt really did give the King of France a giraffe. After listening to this story, how many facts can you remember? What was the name of the Giraffe? Do you remember the name of the man who looked after the Giraffe? What was the name of the French city where the giraffe first arrived? Do you remember any other interesting facts? Write them down.

Challenge 3: If an animal like a giraffe was walking to Prince George, what would you think? Would you be happy or sad to hear this news? What would happen in Prince George that day? Try and use real details in your description, such as street names and park names. Where did the animal arrive first? Describe this day with lots of details.

Challenge 1: I chose this story this week because it teaches you not to listen to other people when they use putdowns or "shredders."

How did the Giraffe feel when everyone made fun of his dancing? What do you think he could have done instead of leaving? Have you ever seen someone make fun of someone else? How did that make you feel? What can we do when we see someone "shredding" someone else?
